A Stór Mo Chroí/Denis Murphy's March (Song Air/March)

from King of the Blind by Joey Abarta

about

‘A Stór Mo Chroí’, or “The Treasure of My Heart” has been around me since I started playing. I learned this song from a woman now living in the San Francisco Bay area, Erin Shrader. When Erin was in college she had the opportunity to take an Irish singing class at Washington State University. To her great fortune, the teacher was Joe Heaney who was artist-in-residence in the 1980’s. I love the poetry of the song as well as the immigrant motif.

“A Stór Mo Chroí, when you're far away
From home you'll soon be leaving
It's many a time by night and day
That your heart will be sorely grieving
The stranger's land may be bright and fair
And riche with it’s treasures golden
You'll pine, I know, for the long, long ago
And the love that is never olden”

Joe always said in his introduction that it was a song for an American wake. I always thought the last verse had a type of keening worked into the song so I tried to incorporate it as best I could. The march that follows is from a recording I heard of the famed Sliabh Luachra fiddle player Denis Murphy.
