Dan Sullivan's Favorite/ The Old Vest and Cravat/ Billy Taylor's Fancy (Hornpipes)

about

Dan Sullivan, the American-born son of a Cork-Kerry professional fiddle and flute player of the same name, worked for the Steinway Piano Corporation in Boston before himself becoming a full-time professional musician. “Dan Sullivan’s Shamrock Band'' was his very popular dance hall and radio band that recorded a number of 78 rpm records in the 1930’s. I learned this tune from my good friend Daniel Neely who is the authority on all things Dan Sullivan. The second tune is from O'Neill's 1001. I was told recently by Irish music historian Don Meade of New York, that the title refers not to men’s fashion, but to two rival gangs, “The Old Vests” and “Cravats”. Between 1806 and 1811 the two gangs fought across large areas of Munster with clashes at fairs and markets often involving firearms and frequent deaths. Another name for it is “The Shanavests” which I think is an anglicization of the Irish An Sean Veist. When I was first learning I was so lucky that my teacher Patrick D’Arcy shared with me lots of older recordings of piping. One that stood out to me was a piper from Co. Waterford named Liam Walsh (1886-1963), a pupil of Willie Rowsome. I have always been blown away by his tight playing, repertoire, and fine regulator work. Walsh recorded this hornpipe called “Billy Taylor’s Fancy” which I believe is named for William Taylor of Philadelphia of the famous pipe maker brothers. They supplied some of the finest pipers of the early twentieth century setting a standard that is still strived for today.
