Hartnett's Ace and Deuce of Pipering/Séan O'Dwyer of the Glen (Set Dances)

from King of the Blind by Joey Abarta

/

about

The first set or long dance comes from Chicago police Sergeant Michael Hartnett. He was a neighbor of Chief O'Neill's and the source of numerous airs in his collection. Born near the Cork/Kerry/Limerick border which is now known as Sliabh Luachra, Hartnett was noted by O’Neill as a dancer of the "old school." Seamus Ennis recorded this version with the more common setting on his record “The Return from Fingal”. The second tune I learned from my teacher Patrick D’Arcy and I always associated it with Clare musicians. Like many set dances it shares its melody with an unmetered song in Irish called “Seán Ó Duibhir an Ghleanna”, or the English version, “Aughrim’s Great Disaster”. Even though I have heard it called a set dance I have never heard of or seen steps composed to the melody.
