Johnny Allen's/The West Wind/The Boy in the Gap (Reels)

from King of the Blind by Joey Abarta

about

“Johnny Allen’s” or “An Bhean Tincéara” is a tune I have always associated with the playing of Willie Clancy and many other Clare musicians. Johnny Allen was a fiddle player from East Clare and had a reputation as a great musician that outlived him generations after. Francis O'Neill collected this tune and many others from Johnny on a trip to the Sliabh Aughty area in 1906 and the reel became a favorite of musicians in Chicago. I first heard “The West Wind” from a recording of Willie Clancy and Bobby Casey. I believe it’s an easier going version of the piping spectacle “Colonel Fraser’s”. “The Boy in the Gap” is a great reel that I’ve loved for a long time. It’s said that Paddy Taylor composed the third part. The reel is usually played with the first part doubled and second and third parts singled.
