King of the Blind (Piece)

from King of the Blind by Joey Abarta

about

During the pandemic, like many other musicians, I went in search of new tunes to add to my repertoire. Because of my lack of sight reading, tunes with interesting names caught my eye. After a couple of long digging sessions I opened Neal’s A Collection of the Most Celebrated Irish Tunes (1724) and the first tune I found was this plaintive piece. Liam Og O’Flynn RIP recorded this on his inspiring self-titled solo album in 1988. Another interpretation of it I found was Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin RIP playing it in a concert put on by the Gaelic Roots Series he helped create at Boston College. The title “The King of the Blind” was said to have been attributed to Turlough O’Carolyn. Whether he composed the tune or it was named for him no one really knows.
