The Faery Queen (Piece)

from King of the Blind by Joey Abarta

/

about

This beautiful tune from the harping tradition was first published in 1724 in The Neal Collection, under the title “Fairy Queen by Sigr. Carrollini” or Turlough O’Carolan. He was one of the most well-known Irish harpers of the 17th century and most people regard him as one of Ireland's greatest composers. In researching this tune I found that my version, while related to the one in Neal's, more closely resembles a version collected by Edward Bunting at The Belfast Harp Festival in 1792. It’s said that in Bunting’s personal copy of his collection, he noted in the margins that the tune was from his good friend Arthur O’Neil, and that O’Carolan didn't compose the tune as much as elaborated on a much older version’s main themes.
“The Faery Queen” was taken from Bunting's collections and published by Francis O’Neill in O'Neill's Music Of Ireland (Lyon & Healy "The 1850" edition). I heard it first played by Liam Og O’Flynn RIP on his self-titled album from 1988. His music inspired me to learn this tune.
