The Garryowen (March)

from King of the Blind by Joey Abarta

/

about

This jovial tune comes from the playing of Patrick J. “Patsy” Touhey (1865-1923) from a cylinder recording he made during his long and successful career. When looking for this tune in the old collections I never found this five-part version in its entirety, though I did find all five parts scattered between two or three collections. I love that this tune, like so many others in the tradition, is woven through American history. The melodies have been reshaped over and over again along with the social and political themes associated with it. It’s mostly known as a two-part tune and has been adopted to applications militarily to lyrical. The most interesting to me was the use of this march for General Custer's 7th Cavalry. Custer was a retired civil war officer who made his last stand in 1876 fighting in the American-Indian Wars, the prolonged and terrible expulsion of the native peoples of America to make way for Euro-American settlers.
